Battle of the Books

The Romeo District Library is happy to announce Battle of the Books 2017. The Battle of the Books was started to get kids excited about reading. This year’s competition will be for any 5th grade student living in Romeo, Washington or Bruce, enrolled in Romeo Community Schools or homeschooled. Battle of the Books is energetic academic competition that builds comprehension and vocabulary skills, teaches teamwork and reinforces just how fun reading can be!

Teams of three to five students and one adult coach* each read the same 10 pre-assigned books over four months. These books have been selected by Romeo District Library staff, titles include a wide range of reading levels and subjects. Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Library, large numbers of books are made available for individuals to check out. In addition to reading the books, teams choose a team name then dress accordingly.

During the “battle” (a 50-question exam), a moderator asks questions that relate to one of the following: a direct quote from one of the book characters; a statement about something that happens in the book; a passage taken directly from the book; details about an illustration or picture. Winning teams receive prizes and the name of the team will be listed on the Romeo District Library Battle of the Books plaque located at both the Graubner and Kezar libraries.
